Oct. 10th, 2004 02:07 amI should be asleep but I have to mention my new default userpic. It depicts three maternal relatives, a grandfather and two great-aunts, from Kentucky. (The little girl on the right is still alive, well, and living independently, and I met her for the first time the summer before last.)
This photograph is one of the clearer demonstrations I have that my family tree contains some fairly recent mixed-race ancestry. People never believe me when I mention it because I have such pale skin. Mum has developed a recent interest in genealogy and her hypothesis (largely unprovable) is that some of our Appalachian ancestors were Melungeons.
Intriguing stuff.

Speaking of my American ancestry (and my American citizenship): my absentee ballot has not yet arrived. I'm getting worried that it won't. Oh well. It's not like another anti-Bush vote would make an iota of difference in New York.

So will you go along with your mom's hypothesis or try to come up with other hypotheses?
She knows more about the matter than I and it seems as good a hypothesis as any, so I think I'll go along with it.
