Back-dated England entry #7: Friday
Feb. 28th, 2003 12:00 pm(Really late edition.)
On Friday,
soubrette,
plotinus and I went punting. I wouldn't have objected at all to a guided tour but
soubrette insisted that it would be more fun if we navigated ourselves. Not that I blame her in the least for what happened when the weather turned nasty, i.e. when
plotinus, the best pilot of the three of us, slipped and fell. I was so stunned at someone falling in the river that I didn't even realize who it was until he'd resurfaced. The poor guy. Then he had to get back in the boat and we had to fight our way back to the docks. Though we had to pay for extra time and the last hour or so of the expedition was miserable, when I think back on the entire experience, at least the first forty minutes of it were really enjoyable. We were followed by some very persistent mallards expecting to be fed. There was even the occasional amusing moment after the weather turned; e.g. our surreal encounters with schoolchildren screaming songs in French from another punt. It'll make for an interesting anecdote later at any rate.
After we got
plotinus home and warmed up,
soubrette had to get to rehearsal for evensong so I found my own way to King's College Chapel... and again barely missed seeing a service there. I wandered dejectedly in the rain for a while as the shops closed for the end of the day but did get to buy a souvenir T-shirt and eventually cheered up. The quintet evensong went pretty well, I thought, though of course I wished they'd placed it on some other day so I could have sung with the choir again.
Here is
soubrette's entry about the day.
