Jan. 23rd, 2005 03:44 pmWe had an amazing closing night performance. The energy level was incredible, the audience was responsive, and everybody appeared to be having a grand old time. My back was considerably worse during both Saturday performances than on Friday night, but it was manageable with lots of stretching and double doses of Extra Strength Motrin and I was able to relax enough on closing night to play quite well for the most part.
As far as I could tell, no one was drunk during the show, much to my relief, and aside from the orchestra's expected musical joke (we substituted "Good Mornin'", a.k.a. the Viagra song apparently[1], from Singin' in the Rain for a short bit of incidental "waking up" music) all of the pranks were minor. Several were actually quite funny and most were pretty innocuous too, although I was very sorry to find out that one orchestra-wide joke (in which I did participate though I didn't originate it) caused unintentional offense to a cast member.
[1] Used in an ad I've never seen, which shows you how much television I watch.
So now it's over. Hard to believe. During the performance, I managed not to get too paralyzed by the knowledge that it was my last chance to play that score but, as always (and especially since this was such an amazing show), it's sad to be finishing the run. It was a good number of shows though: long enough that we got to build some huge word-of-mouth momentum and sick people had a chance to recover during the break, and short enough that people didn't burn out. It would have been a pity if I've gotten bored watching the show. As it was, only the knowledge that I was about to play my big piccolo solo kept me from crying after "They Can't Take That Away From Me"/"But Not For Me".
We in the orchestra joined the audience in giving
sherbear82 a well-deserved round of applause after the Exit Music. To my surprise, the framed photograph presented as her gift was an enlargement of a picture I took during rehearsals! Nifty.
PS: We did get back our sick actor for the last three performances. Though the vocal director did an amazing job, it wasn't the same and it was good to have the whole character back.
