Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes--gaah, they're beautiful! Anyhow, yes I saw Brokeback Mountain last night, following an invitation for UUCQ members to join the KUF youth group at the cinema. The film was crushingly sad. There's not much more to say that hasn't already been said by the movie critics.

I actually spent some time being social on a Friday evening. In fact, more than one person invited me out on the same day. Remarkable.

The pet rat saga continues. I gathered the legal evidence and presented it to the manager. Long story short: she strongly objects to rodents in the building but she acknowledges that according to the law she can't prevent me from having them.

She freaked out at me at first--emotional blackmail, implying that I was stabbing them in the back after they'd been so nice to me before, that I'm a hypocrite for accepting their offer to keep my bike in my apartment rather than in the underground parking as the rules officially dictate--but I managed to stay calm, sympathetic and reassuring enough that she calmed down. She did grudgingly admit that, legally, they can't prevent me from keeping caged rodents. Nevertheless, nothing I said could alter her compulsion to take pre-emptive action against pet rodents rather than punish (as the law dictates) rodent owners after (and if) their pets have caused damage.

Since she had such strong feelings, I started to make plans for a graceful exit followed by the adoption of a cat. But, then she started saying things like, "Well, yes, I trusted that you of all people wouldn't sneak around," and "Yes, I'm sure you'd be careful and it probably wouldn't happen," and, most significantly, "But... just have them out of the apartment when potential tenants visit." Such comments seem almost like implicit permission...?

Originally, the manager's condition did seem pretty manageable. But the person from whom I am considering adopting has experienced various unfortunate events that mean she won't be able to offer temporary ratsitting at her house. We're working on finding someone else.
