Ouch

So, I had my first chiropractic appointment (ever) today. At the risk of offending all the chiropractors out there, I was frankly a bit apprehensive. Chiropractors in Canada have had a slightly dubious reputation in the eyes of some people ever since there was a well-publicized case in which one woman died from neck manipulation. My dad seemed worried when I told him about the appointment, as did my flute professor. I've only ever had physiotherapy, and my physiotherapist at home emphatically did not recommend I see the chiropractor in town here. There is a physiotherapist in the next town whom I saw twice last year; I was supposed to see her more this year, with my flute professor, but that never worked out. (I've been making requests to that effect since the beginning of the year, and my professor being... uh, scattered, as she is, never got around to it.)

As I've recovered from Bell's Palsy since December, I've had to increase my practice time. My back pain, neck pain, wrist pain, jaw pain, you-name-it-pain have all been getting worse and worse. Finally, last week, out of desperation, I phoned every clinic in the book that might be even remotely helpful: one clinic was closed*, the one mentioned above had a huge waiting list, a chiropractic clinic had several times open this week, and a massage therapist could treat me the day before the jury. I ended up making an appointment with the chiropractor and the massage therapist.

Anyway, Mum thought I'd be okay and another student in the (music) department already sees this person, so I kept the appointment. So it was that I found myself at the chiropractor's today, undergoing treatment that will last at most two weeks, just long enough to get good and sore apparently but not long enough to really correct anything. Let me explain: I felt quite good leaving the clinic, but now my back hurts more than ever which is the last thing I need at this point. I'm not one to knock something (i.e. chiropractric treatment) before I've tried it, but I'm not sure that if will do a whole lot of good in the short run.

The jury is on Saturday. On a slightly positive note, my cold sores (acquired over the weekend) appear to be healing. Maybe I'll be able to play without them hurting tomorrow.

* This place has since then turned out to be a registered physiotherapist. For treatment of the symptoms (and for treatment I can recognize and suggest how to proceed), perhaps I should have phoned them back? It's probably too late now either way.
