at last!

I have arrived at Queen's University. Well, strictly speaking, I arrived around dinner time yesterday, but I only just got my computer connected. The back doors to the residence (i.e. those near my room) are out of commission, so Mum and I got quite the workout lugging my junk all the way down the hallway and up five sets of stairs. I'm pretty well moved into my room (finally)--just need to get stuff better organized. Mum was quite generous in staying overnight (in my bed) and driving me around today to do some longish-distance shopping.

This particular "house" (wing) of the residence in which I was placed is almost entirely filled with graduate students. The powers that be placed me with students my age; that was nice of them. Many of these students are just as clueless about the surroundings as I am because they are new to the school too and didn't get a comprehensive orientation, so I'm in good company. I had been strongly considering signing up for frosh orientation week but

    a) I arrived late enough to miss quite a number of the activities (I even missed the late registration time)
    b) I'm highly unlikely to see any of these people in my classes
    c) I'm not a first-year student and I have other dates and times I'm supposed to appear in various places, and last but not least...
    d) I wasn't entirely sure I wanted to march around in a silly costume, scream my lungs out with a cold-infected throat, and get really dirty and sleep-deprived again.

So I didn't sign up for it. It was fun watching all the costumed people wandering about, though. (And at this school, they are not just shirts--they are costumes!)

My chief regret about my late arrival is that I missed the incoming music students meeting so I have no clue yet what's happening there. (I also wish I hadn't missed the house meeting on Sunday.) One of my first orders of business tomorrow will be to visit the music building and see if I can figure out some matters. Speaking of music... practice time and space is going to be a challenge. All students (no exceptions as far as I've been able to tell) are kicked out of the music building at 10pm. This residence has what was once a "music room" (according to the sign), but it's a now a joke; the piano is old and out of tune and on top of that it doubles as a detox room for drunk students. Eurgh. Piano exam (very kindly delayed) on Tuesday, ensemble auditions and ear test next week...

My next order of business will be to phone Information Technology Services to complain that my start-up CD won't recognize me as Windows 2000 administrator. Even when and if that particular problem gets sorted out, I know the program won't let me proceed unless I install Service Pack 4. Yes, the exact package that completely mucked up my computer before. (Windows 2000 had to be re-installed before the network card was recognized again.)

So I'm confused and almost completely on my own. On the upside, very nearly every single person with whom I have come into contact has been extremely accomodating, helpful, and friendly. And though I'm a bit scared I'm excited too.
