After countless hours of toil, my computer is good as new! Or at least as homogenously "good as new" as a 2000 ThinkPad on its second hard drive and second OS with upgraded memory, a new mouse, and a second-hand keyboard qualifies to be.
I have a nice clean hard drive... but not for long, seeing how I'm busy filling it up again with all the programs I consider "essential". Windows Update was tried as soon as the video and ethernet drivers were installed and it worked without a hitch--finally! Symantec AntiVirus is also in place, so I shouldn't be getting any other viruses any time soon.
Logs, settings, and skins for Trillian appear to have imported (*ahem*copyandpasted*ahem*) okay. Eudora is installed, but I haven't yet attempted to import any mailboxes. Based on my experience at campus "Internet QuickStop" kiosks, I've decided to give Mozilla Firebird a try as my default browser.
Interesting how I mention the internet applications, eh?
Word from Mum is that I'll be inheriting my dad's new-ish and higher-end ThinkPad soon and passing this one along to my (admittedly hard-done-by where computers are concerned but far from a power user) sister at some future unspecified date.
I wish I knew that tentative date but I don't so I'm still treating this computer as my own. I've grown rather attached to it, to tell the truth, and when the screen isn't going haywire (i.e. bright green and red lines two thirds of the way up the screen) it works fine. (Besides, I'm preparing myself for disappointment. Word last summer was that I would be getting a new laptop, so that shows how reliable those sorts of things tend to be.)
My wrists hurt, and my arms, and my back, and my neck, and... Once I get everything basically back to normal, I'm doing my best to minimize computer usage for a while.
