One final thing:

I need to write a (maddeningly short) 6-8 page term paper on one opera and discuss the qualities that make it Romantic. If you music fans on my friends list would be so kind, please suggest which of the following you think I should investigate and explain why it's interesting/good/moving/whatever, or suggest a different opera so long as it has Romantic qualities.

At this point, I'm leaning towards either of these:
Strauss: Salome - I am an Oscar Wilde fan and have seen a production of the play (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] soubrette) which would give me a bit of a head start on this one. I've also been told I'd like the opera.
Stravinsky: Rake’s Progress - I own a CD of this and love it.

Other options on the professor's list that I'm considering but would have to investigate more:
Bartok: Bluebeard’s Castle - I generally think Bartok is pretty darn cool.
Berg: Wozzeck - I've been told it's devastatingly sad but I've never heard it. I like Berg's chamber works and Lieder.
Dvorak: Rusalka
Lortzing: Undine - I know absolutely nothing about this composer.
Schoenberg: Erwartung - I like the Schoenberg songs I've studied (especially the ones from Book of the Hanging Garden).
Schubert: Alfonso und Estrella - I don't know how I'd like Schubert's operas though I love his better-known works, especially the Lieder.
Strauss: Elektra
Tchaikovsky: Pique-Dame - I'm not familiar with Tchaikovsky's operas at all, just a couple symphonies which were enjoyable enough, and the ballets of course.
Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin - See above.
Wagner: Lohengrin - I like Flying Dutchman, Meistersinger, and a much of the Ring cycle but I find Tristan und Isolde a bit much at times.
Wagner: Parsifal - See above.
Weber: Euryanthe - I've heard or seen a couple scenes from Der Freischutz, including of course the famous Wolf's Glen scene which I still think is really nifty despite having to study it in three separate courses. I don't know anything about his other operas.
Weber: Oberon - See above.
