We were working on falling into the Drums[1] formation (a square with each person 3 steps apart) and I realized that I kept mixing up turns on the march (worked on for several days) with Drums pivots (just learnt). I spent basically all of the next break practicing pivots under the watchful eye of an 'old boy'. In the next period, we tried falling in again. Once we were all in place, the Drum Major spoke up.

"That was very sloppy. I expect you to pivot properly."
[I steel myself for criticism, as usual]
"The only rookie I saw whose turns even vaguely resembled Drums pivots was [my last name!]."

It seemed like only a halfway compliment to me (i.e. only vaguely resembled a pivot) but that didn't stop several people, especially the aforementioned 'old boy', from congratulating me in the locker room after the period.

[1] The military musicians at the Fort (aside from the pipers) are referred to as the Drums. Strictly speaking, we are drummers, buglers and fifers when not under the command of the Drum Major, but the term "Drums" is used fairly frequently in informal contexts.

I have read said recent entry.

What exactly is this that you're in? I guess I'd find out if I read pas twhere I reached.. maybe later. It's obviously a marching band, and I'll assume it's for Queen's. I'm quite envious, actually... I wish I could get a chance to play drums (even though you're a fifer in this.. right?)

Anyhoo, I must update my journal.
