(That's "The Drums Song". The Drill Squad has a song that makes fun of us too, naturally.)

I'm still working at Fort Henry. Very little else exists (or can exist) in my life right now. We've done four Sunset Cermonies (a.k.a. "shows") so far. The latest show had five ranks of fifers--and therefore included every fifer/bugler in the Drums-a feat that was accomplished only once last year, in the very last show of the season.

Though I manage okay while at work, I'm in so much (back, shoulders, foot) pain all the time, having such difficulty regulating my sleep and getting to work early enough to shine my uniform, and so unable to find time and energy to practice flute that I wonder almost constantly how I can possibly get through the whole summer without quitting. I have been fitted for orthotics but they won't arrive for another week and a half. Still no blisters but I've lost most of the sensation in my toes.

Most of the Guard are going to Washington D.C. from July 30 to August 1 to perform with the U.S. Marine Corps. I am not going... but I can't say I'm surprised. While I may be "the best fifer in the Drums" (according to the Drum Serjeant, as I've probably said before), my drill skills are about average and I don't learn everything super-quickly as some do. Only three out of the ten Drums rookies were chosen, two plus one alternate. I would probably find the whole experience incredibly taxing on my mind and body anyway, and the Drum Major and Captain fo the Guard are no doubt aware of this. (See above.) Nevertheless, it's depressing how we rejects are excluded more and more as the trip approaches.
