I took decisive action today and... didn't show up for my Queen's Student Opera Company orchestra audition. How inconsiderate of me. This was for several reasons.
  • I'd rather play Gershwin until January than double Donizetti melody lines on flute until March.
  • If I can get in (still working on that), being in the chorus of a comic opera would be a helluva lot of fun. The stage action would be more interesting this year.
  • If I get into the Crazy for You orchestra, I would rather not have to learn two orchestra parts.
  • Frankly, my flute auditions so far this year have been harrowing experiences. And I didn't practice yesterday.
  • If there's only one flute part (which is what it looks like most of the time), I didn't stand a chance in hell against the people who were listed on the sign-up sheet anyhow.

Now, if I get into the QMT orchestra and the QSOC cast, I don't know how on earth I'd handle both. Having the performances in different months would help, but.... I may ask if it's still possible to apply for QSOC Assistant Stage Manager.

Completing the musical round-up:

Two Choral Ensemble rehearsals have come and gone. We're rehearsing in a lecture hall where the seating and acoustics are absolutely wretched. Aside from that, it looks like it will be a good time. We're singing Vaughan Williams and "Shenandoah." Stephen Hatfield, the man who writes directions in Jesus Met the Woman at the Well like, "a deep groove with a strong backbeat-bass line rich and woody, like a stand-up bass," is going to do a workshop with us. The director is slightly eccentric and fruity as they come. (Those who know me will surmise correctly that this is not a negative comment.)

The second church choir rehearsal was just as enjoyable as the first. Another student has joined, another alto.

I'm already well behind on my course readings. Feh.

Whoa!! It sounds like you'll be pretty busy with extra-curriclars this year! I totally understand about wanting to do it all though... every year I always say I'm going to cut back and then before I know it I get talked in to taking on something else (like opera chorus last year). It's really too bad that we have to take classes at school... it would be so much more fun to just join clubs!

He is pretty fruity, isn't he? I do have to say that as much as choir is not completely my thing the rehearsals are pretty enjoyable, and he's very amusing while also being very interesting to watch. I find this choral directing thing quite interesting. heh
