Oct. 5th, 2004 01:27 amMy audition for the opera chorus was successful. I'm again in an all-female tenor section. It makes sense to reserve the men for the baritone part but I don't understand why there are twice as many sopranos as "tenors" when both parts are divisi and soprano voices will inevitably carry better than women singing tenor parts. There is no alto section. How strange--and ironic if Donizetti or his audience didn't like the sound of women singing in a low range.
Oh dear. Now I'll have to budget all of my time in order to manage everything. I'll have to hope that the opera doesn't get too crazy until second term. If I can swing the time commitment, though, it should be fun. If I end up dropping out, I'll feel even worse that I got in instead of a voice major friend. No, wait... think positive thoughts...

I saw a lecture and monologue by this woman on Saturday. She was captivating, hilarious, and also really disturbing in the 40 minute monologue from Christopher Durang's Laughing Wild. I'd seen the monologue performed before--by a student (a recipient of a drama scholarship at Mt A)--and had been impressed, but it paled in comparison with the real item. The lecture was like an extended version of Standing Naked in the Wings (one of my favourite books)... with the addition of live action.
More than a bargain at $5; why the heck weren't there more than thirty people there? Strange as it seems, the presentation was co-sponsored by the School of Music. She's going to be working with some voice students, I think, and my Vocal Techniques professor is the person who contacted her. Perhaps music students stayed away because they weren't interested in a presentation about being an actress but that doesn't explain why there weren't more drama students (whose departments also co-sponsored).
[PS: She's not at all flaky new-agey in real life as one might guess from her website. Really.]
