May I just say that Hugh Laurie is brilliant?[1] I may? Good. Once I got used to hearing the same American accent he used in Saturday Night Fry, I was completely engrossed. Several aspects of the show are only mediocre, but what a central character! House's dialogue and its delivery by the eminent Mr. Laurie is so darkly hilarious that there were times I couldn't keep from clapping my hands in delight. I hope the show lasts so I can see many more episodes but I doubt it will get through more than one season.

For one thing, a cursory glance at the Fox bulletin board for the show indicates that a lot of people dismiss the show because they find it offensive. I don't understand their outrage at the character's insensitivity. In terms of diplomacy, compassion, tact and so on, the guy's a complete jerk. That's the whole point! We're supposed to find his manners repulsive.

I can, however, understand complaints about medical errors if they're justified. It's a pity if they don't check their facts carefully enough. But, to be honest, many criticisms can be made about the show's lack of realism. What hospital would tolerate a doctor who risks the safety of his patients to prove a point? To be really picky about standard Hollywood practice, what real hospital employees (aside from Dr. House) would look so much like gorgeous, well groomed, well rested, smooth skinned, elegantly coiffed (and in the case of the women, made up, and cleavage-baring) actors? What real hospital would be so atmospherically lit? We are talking about obvious fiction here.

Still, to put it in the most intellectual terms possible: woo!

[1] Well yes, I did already know he's brilliant... but this is further proof.
