The past while has been a hazy mixture of non-restorative sleep, trying to stay awake and failing, far too much caffeine and Motrin, back/shoulder/neck pain, getting very little work accomplished, and desperate short-lived attempts to cheer myself up. I've gotten extensions on several (but not all) of my overdue assignments. This is all very nice but doesn't do a jot of good when I'm physically and mentally incapable of finishing projects.

I can handle taking care of my personal habits (get adequate sleep, attend class, practice music, eat okay, be a good housemate) and neglect coursework or I can focus on coursework and completely ruin my personal habits. Increasingly, it seems I'm totally incapable of balancing both--and in the end I end up sabotaging the coursework anyway because I fall apart. I'm trying to fend off the growing suspicion that I don't even belong in university.

On a more cheerful note:

Back when I was a bit more functional (and for the sake of social activity to save my sanity), I attended my first meeting of the Society for Python Appreciation and Mimicry (SPAM) last Friday.  I was on the mailing list all last year but they never scheduled events at times I could make it. A choice group of geeks indeed! We watched Mel Brooks's Spaceballs, saw a slideshow, played various party games, chatted, listened to mp3s, and argued about how to hook up a laptop to the lecture hall A/V system. There was remarkably little Python content involved and I gather this is not an unusual state of affairs. In fact, several people were just as Python semi-ignorant as me.

Several SPAM members were featured on Rick Mercer's show last year.

The next day, I played flute duets (with a school friend) as background music at the church bazaar by request of one of the choir members. I was in poor shape to play flute but we stuck with pretty simple music and got many compliments nevertheless. They even served us lunch. Church people are nice that way. United Church people are even nicer in that they don't try to evangelize. Another pleasant break and little ego boost. This was the same friend who led me to go to SPAM instead of a concert after our rehearsal on Friday. (I should start giving Queen's people pseudonyms.)

New userpic: I haven't cut my hair since August. I keep intending to but never get around to it. The bangs are very uneven and fly in my face. Not to mention this mini-mullet I'm developing at my neck...
