Mar. 29th, 2005 01:42 amThe QMT Board (including yours truly) met today to choose next year's winter show from the suggestions brought forward by the director. The winning candidate is Urinetown. Personally and selfishly, I'm disappointed that there is no flute or oboe part. As a member of the Board and a member of QMT in general, however, I'm excited at the prospect of doing such a unique show. I hope I find some way to get involved in it.

Today was move-in day for A New Brain. The cue-to-cue and partial tech run went surprisingly smoothly. Even my oboe playing was pretty consistent, probably at least partially due to an overdue physiotherapy appointment. I hope the trend continues.
It's pretty cramped in the balcony of the Baby Grand--and it's going to be even more so once everybody returns tomorrow--but I'm lucky enough to be sitting where I can see most of what's happening on stage. I always bring schoolwork with me during tech weeks but I never get anything done because everything happening around me is so much more interesting. And we in the orchestra had a grand old time sitting up there where we could chat during lulls in the action without disturbing the cast and director. We had plenty of entertainment in addition to the regular show too; it will be interesting if Sef (music director) drops his baton into the audience during an actual show.
I really can't afford all this time I'm spending on non-academic matters but... man, I love musical theatre. Off to make an urgent update to the QMT website now...

Date: 2005-03-29 03:39 pm (UTC)Hmm.
Date: 2005-03-29 04:59 pm (UTC)To be honest, I didn't have much to do with the decision. I was there for the first half hour of the meeting (i.e. the beginning of the Urinetown proposal) before I had to leave for a very important doctor's appointment, and when I returned everyone else had reached a consensus in favour of Urinetown. The other two shows looked to be in a pretty similar edgy vein, by the way, so I didn't really object to the decision being made without me.
As for my opinion of the show: I haven't seen it or even heard the whole CD. What I've heard of it strikes me as irrevently (and, admittedly, crassly) funny, clever, and of course extremely cynical about musicals.
The music itself I found--meh--moderately tuneful if not as good as Gershwin, Sondheim, Bernstein, Lerner and Loewe, Porter, Kander and Ebb, Rodgers, or Schwartz. It was okay but clearly subordinate to the self-referential lyrics; I think I'm the only one on the Board who had any reservations about the music, but I was worried that my personal feelings on the orchestration were clouding my judgement.
Ack! (spelling mistake)

Date: 2005-03-30 02:04 am (UTC)Lots of people love it, so I know that my opinion is in the minority. I just never found it clever. The whole time I was watching it, I kept feeling like they were trying to trick me into thinking bathroom humour can be edgy and clever, but....it was still bathroom humour. That said, who knows? Maybe another production will sell me. I've only seen one QMT show that I didn't like, so maybe I will be converted.
I also have to keep reminding myself that the big show won't be a big show next year. Which is so sad. Erick was talking like maybe they'll never go back to the Grand. I hope that doesn't happen. That, for me, was what QMT was all about!

Anyway, what was the one show you didn't like?
Re: Hmm.
Date: 2005-03-30 03:24 pm (UTC)And I am still so mad that they put the boys on stage during Mama's song. That song can redeem everything, and they ruined it.
But again, I'm really opionated. Did you know? HAHAHA
