Oct. 27th, 2005 12:55 pmLorne Elliott *and* the Frantics *and* Bowser and Blue are taping a show in Belleville, an hour's drive away, and I can't find any public transit that will take me there and back. Argh!
Life continues. I attended some workshops on procrastination and am attempting to develop some sort of study routine. Getting up at 8:30 has become easier recently so I hope I can make it a habit. Now, I need to work on actually doing something productive once I've woken up. Inevitably, it seems, I'm nowhere near in control of my academic assignments. LiveJournal is a serious "time bandit". Case in point: the past, oh, hour an a half. I've been trying to avoid the temptation so my friends page is mostly unread.
The flute professor has effectively refused to give me lessons this year for fear I'll hurt myself. She says I need an ergonomically modified flute, ideally an UpRite headjoint. Unfortunately, there are several repeating circles in this process. I need to continue playing in order to justify the purchase of a new headjoint/flute and also, more practically, in order to judge at the store which flute would suit me best; but I can't continue playing on my current flute. Also, a new flute/headjoint would probably improve matters tremendously but I won't know if that is so until I buy one, but I can't buy one until I'm certain it would help, but I won't know until I buy one, but...
So, in order to circumvent the problem by basically ignoring it--and at the flute professor's suggestion--I've signed up for oboe lessons. It's exciting but also more than a little frightening. One hopes some professional assistance will improve my confidence at QSOC rehearsals too.
Two notable workshops/concerts I've attended: a James Hill ukulele workshop (he played this!) and a concert by the Khac Chi Ensemble, who produce sounds on traditional Vietnamese instruments (with a couple other small instruments thrown in) that would not be of place at an electro-acoustic avant garde concert. I had a marvellous time trying the Dan Bau after the concert.
My participation in the Ramadan Fast-athon and a dance class trip to buy tap shoes tomorrow may turn out to be an interesting confluence of activities.
