I have just had one of the stupidest mishaps of... well, if not my whole life, at least the past year. I practiced my jury music this evening, as usual. As I was swabbing out the headjoint, something startled me, and I dropped it. There is now a noticeable dent on my headjoint, right where it connects with the body of the flute. As a result, I cannot put the flute together and therefore (obviously) cannot play it.
The dent cannot be repaired by anybody in the music faculty; the technician's usual method for repairing dents would damage the gold lining. The nearest music store that repairs flutes is in Halifax, a three hour drive away. I know nobody with a car, aside from my professors who are all incredibly busy. The last time I sent an instrument there, it took more than a month. The first of only two rehearsals with my accompanist is tomorrow at 2:30pm. My jury is around September 27. Only in the past month have I begun to master a new embouchure on my (open hole Armstrong) flute; my flute is now quite unique as I have made several modifications to make it more ergonomically fitting. The music department has only one decent flute for lending, and it's a (completely different) closed hole Yamaha!
I have owned this flute for three years, and to my recollection never damaged it so it was unplayable. Now, at the worst possible time, I do. What a moron!
