Still procrastinating...
Mar. 10th, 2002 12:21 amIt's ironic, really, that I'm busy with so many rehearsals. I had thought that being relieved of regular pit orchestra rehearsals would free up my time for schoolwork and practice. On the contrary. I have fewer regular rehearsals now, but a lot more irregular ones, most of them for The Sound of Pirates and other people's composition recitals. A further irony: I'm supposedly a "flute major", but of the nine rehearsals/performances I have this week, only one involves playing the flute. All the others involve singing, an art in which I am wholly untrained.
I must be getting used to the somewhat abrasive coaching manner of the Pirates musical director. (He's a nice person in real life, by the way, as close to a friend as I usually get.) I was able to sing a little bit better yesterday. I'm going to have to get used to singing loudly, solo, and in tune, a combination I don't get to practice much. When I'm being careful about tuning and can't risk cracked notes (i.e. sight singing tests), I sing quietly. And about the only chance I have to sing really loudly is during choir practice, when I have the moral support of an entire section.
The acting in Pirates is another matter entirely, one in which I have even less practice. About the only reason I was able to work up the guts to audition with a "monologue" was that it was for people I know and a minor, parody, revue production; also, we're encouraged to mug and over-act shamelessly.
Things are looking just a tad more optimistic on the flute playing front. I have a dentist appointment a week from Monday for a bite plate which will hopefully improve the TMJ pain. I was actually able to show of the results of practicing on Monday and Tuesday at my flute lesson on Wednesday. It was wonderful, really! Despite this, though, I've already broken my resolution to practice every day. Wednesday, I tried to finish my Purcell assignment for the due date on Thursday. (I'm now trying to finish it tonight.) Thursday, I was studying for a Harmony test the next morning at 8:30. (I actually did make it to that test on time--hooray!)
I was most flattered when a music student friend ask me in February to play in her composition recital. She was in the cast of Annie Get Your Gun, and apparently liked my playing. (She's a flute major.) She just got the music to me, and it's easy, but I still need to practice it so I can play it well when she decides to call for rehearsals.
I swear: I am going to do my utmost to practice for at least an hour tomorrow. I have rehearsals from 11-12, and 1-2, but sure I can fit some practice time around those. I really do enjoy practicing once I've taken the ibuprofen, used the Magic Bag, done the stretches, gotten the instruments and music, soaked the oboe reed, and set up in the practice room. It's just getting to that point which is so damned difficult. Too many distractions...
