[A Lorne Elliott reference to "O Canada", that was.]

So yesterday was my first Canada Day in a while not spent with a bunch of crazed wackos in matching brightly-coloured T-shirts (a.k.a. Whosers). I had a whole bunch of things I needed to do before I left (and at the time I was still under the impression I'd be leaving on Wednesday) but I knew everything would be closed. So I dawdled around for a few hours, then bicycled downtown (a 10-30 minute drive depending on the weather) to witness the end of the festivities at Bandstand Park. A couple local bands played (various types of folk/country), children played, and they were out of hot dogs. I had one nice conversation with an elderly lady then sat in the shade and tried to sing harmony until I caught a tick trying to burrow into my arm, after which I was paranoid about every insect bite on my body. The event was pleasant enough though it closed at 4:00 (no fireworks), but it made me realize how few people I know in this town when the students are away.

Then I went on an extended ride around town and through the countryside, until dusk. The heat was at a tolerable level, so I had a good time. I believe I have now seen more of Sackville/Middle Sackville/Upper Sackville than of my own small home town (technically, village). Come to think of it, there's a lot more of this town than my home town. And it has the Trans Canada Trail.

I stayed in Sackville, again, because I'm involved in a little performance on Sunday. (VIA has a very generous student refund policy.) The four of us rehearsed a little rendition (harmony a la O Brother, Where Art Thou?, of course) of "Down To the River to Pray" today, to be performed in church. The words don't quite fit United Church doctrine, but it's nice music and the choir is on summer hiatus.
