The powers that be have cancelled next year's fourth-year Mahler course. I am very annoyed.

Today, I slept in until the exact time my first and only class was to start. (All other classes have ended or been cancelled.) I considered getting ready and going but upon realizing that with travel time I'd miss most of the class I collapsed back into bed until 2:30pm. Meh. I went out with a group of music students after the concert... but I drank no alcohol and was back by 11pm!

The Wind Ensemble concert last night went pretty well. Matters improved considerably once the director gave us that talking-to a couple weeks back. We played some quite nifty contemporary band stuff. I have realized that I never got a program, so I don't know which pieces go with which composers. I intend to get a copy of the recording. An interesting event took place (excerpted from an IM chat held shortly afterwards):

We had a somewhat unique situation at the concert tonight. Some random guy told our director that he planned to propose to his girlfriend in the audience tonight, to mark her birthday. He requested that a piece be dedicated to her, and our director (being a good-natured fellow) figured he might as well. I had the (mis?)fortune to be sitting in the section of the band with the very best view of this couple. It was cute but *very* distracting. The piccoloist next to me kept making "awwww!" googly eyes and directing my gaze (with her head) up to the balcony.

I continue to be amazed that this school has no real recital hall. Large ensembles concerts take place in what is obviously intended to be a meeting/convocation hall and individual recitals are held in the student centre or a cavernous lecture hall. Even the Kingston Symphony (unrelated to the university) has to hold its concerts in an acoustically deprived theatre.
