The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie has finally started shooting. Good to see they're not casting simply for the sake of big names. It's also nice to see that they're not trying to replicate either of the original BBC casts.
There's just one thing I'm wondering about. While DNA himself said he didn't care about the nationality of the actors playing parts other than Arthur Dent, I do think that Ford Prefect should also appear British; we know he's from Betelgeuse but Arthur is under the impression he is from Guildford. If Mos Def (an American) can do an English accent, great! If not, um... the character will be significantly different. Come to think of it, though, h2g2 has been changed considerably before and was doubtless changed quite a bit for the screenplay.
I'm excited to see how the movie will turn out. I've personally found each successive incarnation inferior to the previous one (i.e. the radio series is my favourite) but we'll see how it goes. Please let Trillian be better than in the TV version...

Date: 2004-04-23 09:59 am (UTC)MJS: What about Mos Def as Ford?
Garth: Well, you can't get more of a contrast between Martin Freeman and Mos Def. He is just marvellous, he's just a fabulous bloke, just wait until you meet him, you'll love him, and he's just sort of perfect for Ford. We didn't actually know much of his work before we went to meet him and since meeting him and investigating everything he's done it was almost no question, it just had to be him.
MJS: Can you just confirm, because people are going to be worried, the guy is a rapper
Garth Yes.
MJS: But he's not going to be playing a hip-hop Ford is he?
Garth: No. I think that would be the most appalling thing ever in the history of the world. And to be fair, I didn't know much about Mos Def before I met him, and didn't think it was going to be the right thing. That's why I say when you actually meet him he's the most wonderful actor first and foremost, but he's also incredibly funny, incredibly clever and just fits the brief in the most unexpected way.
