Thursday, Friday of first week: Basic Foot Drill: in addition to the usual "disgusting", "pathetic", "appalling", "awful" and "inexcusable" from our I/C's (In-Commands), we first started to get the occasional "not bad", then "good" and then finally on Friday, one "fantastic"

Monday: leg injury from over-use (primarily from marking time, i.e. marching on the spot, knees up and shins swinging out), excused from BFD after a couple periods, carbine rifle drill (ick; I don't have that much strength in my right hand!)

Tuesday: started artillery training (referred to as "arty"), more BFD, got hair trimmed

Wednesday: lots of tours and review for test, learned how to hold fifes (beginning Drums Foot Drill)

Thursday (very windy): guide test (ick, too many dates to be memorized by rote), more arty, sentry training (standing motionless was surprisingly easy with new insoles), learned fatigues (cleaning), and...

"hell" final rookie BFD period (hazing: continuous marching, every senior screaming their heads off at us) was shortened a bit by torrential rain but then we had to march through puddles, I thought I handled the verbal abuse pretty darn well, leg injury was further aggravated by 5 straight minutes of marking time, came across as a wimp who couldn't take the yelling because I started crying from pain (also annoyance at the officers for making me mark time an *extra* two minutes... and humiliation at crying from pain again) as soon as we arrived in the locker room afterwards, slept through rookie party that night out of physical and emotional exhaustion

Friday: day off

Saturday: day off

Sunday: Opening Day

Some other notes:

There's one girl in the Drums (also a rookie) who is nice, friendly, and enthusiastic but she does not think about whether what she is about to say will hurt someone's feelings. Not only has she said to me, "You're, like, the slowest person ever!" and (in response to me saying that I'm always rushing to avoid being late) "Wow, that's not much of a life!" but she has also used the terms "fag" and "retard" as casual descriptions of outside people. Lately, I think she's concluded I'm a loser; perhaps she has detected my dislike of her insensitivity.

Sentry training was actually rather a nice rest. After being shown how to relieve a sentry, walk our beat, and signal distress, we were left to stand completely still in rank in front of the sentry box. Muscle stiffness was probably helped considerably by the high winds that day (i.e. one had to shift slightly to resist being blown over). To my surprise, I didn't bat an eyelash when a tour group went by who were all painted bright purple.

Captain A [returning after leading a tour group into the fort and talking to them for I-don't-know-how-many minutes]: "You're a steady looking bunch of recruits. If only you could march this well..."

(I agree with him. It's absolutely pathetic that some people still can't march without speeding up, which always throws off the pace of the rest of the group and in turn messes up our forward dressing. Much of our marching is done with only *Drums* recruits, for crying out loud. We're musicians. You'd think we could hold a steady tempo.)

Wow... the funny thing is even though it sounds like crap and what not, it's still, somewhere in the back of the mind, enjoyable.

Respect through intimidation.. boo.
