So another person called me "Sir" yesterday. In all fairness, he was approaching from a distance and I was wearing very unisex clothing and sitting hunched over a newspaper. The incredibly polite young man had asked for directions; i.e. the response would require me to talk. "Uh-oh," I thought, "He's going to be embarassed." But I couldn't think of any way to avoid it... so he was. Extremely embarassed and falling over himself to apologize, despite my assurances that it
was okay. Poor guy.

Earlier that evening, I attended a speech and Q&A with (former Lt.-Gen.) Romeo Dallaire. It provided much to think about. He is a compelling speaker, modest, and unbelievably optimistic considering his experiences.

Once at a Sonic drive-in restaurant in Louisiana, I got called "ma'am"... Now, do I look like a ma'am to you?

(It definitely sounded like "ma'am" and not "man")

I got my first "ma'am" about three years ago, from a customer approaching from behind. I don't get that anymore.

On the bright side, at least the guy was polite and called you "sir", and not "hey you" or something like that. Also, at least he addressed you like you were a grown-up... at a hotel restaurant in Corner Brook last week the waitress asked me if I was under 12. I know I look young, but do I really look THAT young?
