...a minority of complete idiots has ruined it for everybody. And the poster boy isn't even a Queen's student. I've never had any desire to attend Homecoming parties and even I'm pissed off at the aggression all Queen's students are receiving now.
I'm glad the people I was with just passed by. I hadn't even originally planned to do that much. We decided all the beer bottles being thrown even away from Aberdeen were not a good idea and moved on.
At least I know there were some people having a decent homecoming celebration. The people we saw at the Brew Pub, QP, and the Grad Club were all just having a fun evening out with friends like we were. It's too bad that these dumbasses get out of hand and the rest of the people who enjoyed the weekend responsibly look just as bad to those who don't care to think there are people who know how to behave decently.
The first newspaper article I linked summarizes it pretty well: "[A] weekend street party degenerated into an alcohol-fuelled riot that saw drunken revellers pelting police officers with beer bottles and overturning and burning a car."
Every year, there's a huge party on a certain street in the Student Ghetto. The police have been trying to crack down on the noise, street blockage, broken glass, underage drinking, illegal sale of alcohol, etc. for several years now. Many student resented the the increased police presence during this year's Homecoming weekend--another perceived affront in the latest flare-up of town/gown animosity. Some drunken idiots retaliated violently and it brought on a mob response.
That's about as well as I can summarize it as a person who wasn't there.
